In 2018, the Prince of Peace China Culture Trip was heavily subsidized by the POP’s Foundation, which once again organized this trip for the adoption families with children from China. The summer culture trip was an eight-day in July of 2018 to enhance cultural enrichment in the adoption community to promote understanding and peace among nations. Our China Culture Trips help adopted children and their families learn about the culture and history of the children’s birth country, affirm their heritage, and build new friendships within the adoption community.

In comparison to previous trips, 2018 was the smallest tour group, with three families from various states and a total of four adopted children participating. This small group had a great experience. These families visited the cities of Beijing and Tianjin, visiting the well-known tourist sites such as The Great Wall and the Summer Palace, seeing a Kung Fu Show at the Red Theatre, and taking an evening cruise on the Haihe River. One of the trip's highlights was visiting the Prince of Peace Children’s Home on July 5. Adoptees and adoption families made biscuits and dumplings, followed by dancing together with their children. It was a wonderful day, and we all made memories!

In addition, adoptees also had the opportunity to visit the China Center for Children’s Welfare and Adoption in Beijing. The staff located their official adoption document folders for families to read. It was quite an emotional moment for everyone! The families even met with the children’s welfare worker, who processed their adoption papers at the center.

The 2018 China Culture Trip was an incredible success and an excellent way for many adoptees and adoptive families to learn about their heritage and build connections and friendships.

Here’s what some of the families and children who participated in the 2018 culture trip had to say:

“Traveling with other adoptive families is really important for both children and parents. Children have a chance to experience their birth country with others who share their history. The staff was great! Everyone was wonderful! We love you!”

- Tamara (parent)

“Visiting the children’s home and China Center for Children’s Welfare and Adoption is the best part of the trip for me. It was an eye-opening experience for my daughters as they are being exposed to Chinese culture. They made friends with children of similar origin, and this was also a plus. POP staff tour guides are excellent.”

-Beatrice (parent)

“I think the best part about this trip was reading our adoption files. It was great to meet the person that matched all four of us as well. Of course, the whole trip was amazing and I learned a lot about Chinese culture. The food was also very good. I ate a lot until my stomach was full. The POP staff was hospitable and very fun to hang out with. Thanks to all of the people involved. We had a great and smooth time in Beijing and Tianjin. The scenery was beautiful and kind of reminded me of San Francisco. My favorite part of this trip was celebrating with the kids at the orphanage.”

- Megan (child)

“My favorite part of this trip was going to POP’s Children's Home. Getting to play with children was the highlight of this trip. They are doing really amazing work. Both of our tour guides were great! The food is the best Chinese food I will ever eat. I have never been an adventurous eater, but this trip has shown me why it is actually a good thing! I am really glad I was able to go on this trip and meet all the wonderful people. This trip will be something I cherish forever. Thank you so much!”

- Aya (child)

“The best part was visiting the China Center for Children’s Welfare and Adoption. It was very fun. Both of our tour guides gave us lots of information. Always go to lunch and dinner on an empty stomach. The food is so filling. All the people we met on our trip were super nice. I enjoyed learning about Tianjin and Beijing. I had so much fun! Thank you!”

- Rose (child)

“The tour guides and POP staff were so amazing, understanding, and loving. So positive throughout all of the trip. I will miss all of them. Thanks for all that you do.”
