The most important responsibility while staying with us at the Prince of Peace Children’s Home would be caring for our children. This typically includes playing with the children, reading stories, assisting with feeding, watching the children during field trips, etc. Volunteers will help with cleaning classrooms, washing dishes, utensils, and milk bottles as well as decorating our rehabilitation equipment for the children. Volunteers may also be asked to teach English to the children, and our ongoing volunteers.
We also ask our volunteers to prepare some visuals and information about their home country for an amazing show and tell for the children. Volunteers will assist with writing our monthly newsletter, specifically the “Baby Talk” section.
Many volunteers have unique skills and expertise in different fields beyond the basic responsibilities as a volunteer. Whether it is computer skills that can help our staff or artistic skills that can help with painting our classroom, we welcome all. Some past experiences are listed below. We have recently welcomed a handful of physical therapists that came to POPCH to help with assessments of the children. Last year, a student from the University of Hawaii joined us to help design a more efficient evacuation plan for POPCH. We also had many successful classroom sessions by our volunteers with skills ranging from cooking classes to calligraphy, as well as a local children’s choir to perform for our children.
